The Southern Atelier will be conducting a one week painting workshop at Borgo di Castelvecchio May 20th -27th, 2008 in the heart of the Val d' Orcia in Contignano-Radicofani, Tuscany, Italy      

Tuscany, Italy has inspired artists for centuries even sparking the great Italian Renaissance.  Join Charles Miano and his atelier as they travel to paint en plein air in the Tuscan countryside.

The medieval location of Castelvecchio at IL Borgo, has a rich history including perennial battles amidst the castles and fortresses in the valley of Orcia, Tuscany.  During this workshop, students will learn the same academic processes which motivated some of the greatest artists in history. 

Workshop highlights:

  • Composition fundamentals using Dynamic Symmetry
  • Simplifying the landscape by means of a disegno and grisaille studies
  • Capturing Tuscany's golden light using prismatic color theory expressed by The Impressionists
  • Practical fundamentals and analysis of Old Master techniques
  • Daily painting demonstrations and critiques by Miano
  • A day trip to the heart of Old Florence, including historic museums and sites.
  • A visit to the Florence Academy of Art
  • A visit to a special exhibition celebrating the centenary of the death of Giovanni Fattori, the leader of the  Macchiaioli painting movement in Tuscany
  • An evening of reflection in the ancient city of Siena

 Prices are based on double occupancy and include: stunning accommodations, w/breakfast, workshop instruction(9am-4pm), a welcome dinner and day excursion transportation to Florence.
