Color I: June 15-18, 2010
"Essence of Light and Color"
4- DAY BLOCK AND MUDHEAD STUDY
9:00 AM- 2:00 PM

Color I will focus on painting colored blocks under varying light conditions as well as outdoor Mud head exercises. Attention will be given to the overall atmosphere and personality of various light keys, including sunlight, cloudy day, indoor, outdoor morning and afternoon light. Students will also learn the importance of simplified color masses as they work with both brush and palette knife depicting a model posed against sunlight on the beach. This course is an important prelude to the Color II workshop. There are regular lectures, demonstrations and critiques throughout the course. Color perception, control of masses and values will be considered.

Color II: July 6-9, 2010
"Enhancing your Visual Perception"
4- DAY ROUND FORM AND PORTRAIT STUDY
9:00 AM- 2:00 PM

Color II will focus on painting rounded forms under varying circumstances and its relation and application to the human portrait. Understanding how the light key reveals the color of simplified forms can aid in understanding a complex portrait study. Temperature will be considered as well as color vibration and variation within the large masses of color. Structure of the head will also be considered. There are regular lectures, demonstrations and critiques throughout the course.

Southern Atelier Sculpture Studies

with Stephen Perkins

Program One: The Human Head

Program One will focus on gaining a deeper understanding of the structural, anatomical and expressive elements of the human head. It is pertinent to any visual artist interested in depicting the head in any medium.

One session: $350
Entire Program (all 3 sessions): $975
Model fees are split among the students.

Structure and Volumes of the Head
ENCORE! As requested by popular demand!
August 6 - 8, 2010
Price: $350

Download the Enrollment Form

The first session deals with the structure of the head. This is the most overtly helpful and basic of the three areas of study. It shows you the plane structures and volumes of the head and their geometric simplification. In addition, the analysis proceeds in a systematic manner from the largest masses down to the details in the same manner that one would work, slowly breaking down the form to its smallest elements at the end. Included also will be the all important element of the rhythmic movement of the form. This "music" of organic form is largely responsible for the life like look as opposed to figures appearing dead.

Anatomy of the Head
September 25-27, 2010
Price: $350

Download the Enrollment Form

The second session will have the anatomy of the head as its focus. This is different than structure. The method of study here is ecorche' which is the traditional and unrivaled method of anatomical study for artists. A skull is constructed in a methodical manner and then the muscles and other forms added. Slowly a human head is constructed from the inside out. Finally, morphology or surface form is shown so that the connection of the deep underlying forms to the surface flesh is made.

Facial Expression
November 13-15, 2010
Price: $350

Download the Enrollment Form

In the third session, we pick up from the second and analyze the 6 major facial expressions of the face and their anatomical mechanisms. Using the research of Dr. Paul Ekman, we analyze each expression, its origin, its characteristics and how to create it. Finally we examine the combination of the expressions. Artists should gain an understanding of how to animate their faces to convey the exact emotion that is called for.

Past Workshops

The Head as Shape, Structure, Plane, Morphology
with Dan Thompson
October 23-25, 2009
9:30 AM - 4 PM
Price: $425

Download the Enrollment Form

This workshop is designed for either drawing or painting the portrait head and shoulders. Spotlighting several core concerns within the greater discipline of painting and drawing from life, this workshop is divided into phases or subtopics that are demonstrated on day one: Shape, Structure, Plane, and Morphology. These concepts are broken down in order to clarify matters to the student; such themes offer an interesting way of breaking a successful drawing or painting down into critical material for concentrated study. After the initial demos, a subsequent, two day long pose is organized so that the student may create a more accomplished piece. Beginners may create several, shorter studies for future reference, while more advanced students are enabled to refine their studies.

This 3 day workshop will focus on painting a model from life in natural light. Emphasis will be on the beauty of the flesh color notes in natural light and understanding the form of the head. The workshop will begin with setting up the live model, lighting, color notes, finding a composition with an interesting theme and creating a small color study of the whole composition in preparation for the finished work. Observing this workshop set-up, procedure and execution will be effective for artists when presenting clients the initial ideas and sketches when a commission is underway. The workshop will also include a demo by Mary Minifie and painting time. Lunch time will be used to discuss business angles of the portrait business. At the end of the workshop, there will be a slide lecture, Fireside chat and final critique session which can include work not painted in the workshop.

Workshop: Advanced Life Drawing
with David Kassan
March 26-28, 2010
9:30 AM- 4 PM
Price: $425

Download the Enrollment Form

The focus of this course will be on life drawing methods to investigate the underlying rhythm, expression and emotion of the modern portrait. We will explore both charcoal and graphite with one pose for the entire time so that we can patiently observe and record our findings. Students will execute preliminary rough drawings before moving on to a full-scale finished drawing. All observation will be cumulative and used towards finishing the final work. Instruction will include discussion of practical technical information on different drawing mediums and surfaces, the properties of light on form and how the topography/depth of the face’s form can be visualized and represented. Most importantly, students will learn to transcend the materials so that their full concentration is placed on expressing the model’s presence and emotion. My goal is to give this class a sense of community, where anything art related can be discussed (books, galleries, artists, techniques), debated, enlightened and experienced.

The Classic Figure - A Modern Approach
with Rob Liberace
May 8-11, 2010
Price: $500

Download the Enrollment Form

Participants in Liberace’s Workshop: “The Classic Figure - A Modern Approach,” will be executing the modern method of alla prima and a rich array of contemporary colors. Students will follow a step-by-step method which will allow them to compose a figure painting with the look and finish of classic Renaissance paintings. Though alla prima (the direct manner of finishing a painting while it is wet) is often considered an impressionistic approach, it is also ideal for the careful and thorough modeling which is a hallmark of classical painting. This approach will allow students to thoroughly and efficiently complete a painting without the laborious and time consuming classic approach of glazed layers. Methods of drawing, paint manipulation and color arrangement will be included and a general analysis of the anatomy will be stressed.
